Days for Girls

Recently, I had the pleasure of traveling to King of Prussia, Pennsylvania with Schreyer for Women! We began our day early, and after three hours in the car, we arrived at a local church, where we volunteered with Days for Girls. Days for Girls is an international organization which sews and delivers reusable feminine products to girls in Africa. Once delivered, Days for Girls teaches the recipients how to use the pads, clean the pads, and track their periods. This is crucial, because many girls get their periods, and then stop attending school, which is not ideal. The pads are sustainable not only for the environment, but also for the girl receiving it, due to its cost-effectiveness.

The feminine product making process is complicated; some of us ironed fabric, some of us cut fabric, some of us sewed pieces of fabric together, and others pinned fabric together. That being said, the labor-intensive process is worth it. Seeing the end result of making a period pack was really rewarding, because I was able to see directly what is being delivered. I am planning to apply to the Schreyer-based service trip to Kenya and Tanzania this summer, so hopefully I can deliver some Days for Girls period packs if I get accepted into the program. Days for Girls is an amazing group, and I am so glad that I was able to volunteer with them!
